Important Notice! In the best interest of all parties concerned the decision has been made to postpone the 11th Flamingo's Langebaan Gymkhana to a later date. Please do not take out your competition licence as yet and monitor this page for additional information. Opening event of the 2012 WBMK Gymkhana is now set to be the 3rd Weskus Mall Vredenburg Gymkhana.
Returning for an 11th Flamingo's Restaurant and Dance Club Gymkhana in Langebaan the 2012 Witzenberg Motorklub Gymkhana season is set for another very interesting opening event as many teams have been preparing new cars for quite some time - many of which are set to make their competitive debut.
Now 18 years old the Flamingo's Restaurant and Dance Club have become the "home" base for the Witzenberg Motorklub Series and thanks to a newly resurfaced parking area and, soon to be completed, new access roads to the popular facility will hopefully soon be the venue at which most events have taken place!
Günther and Louise Appelgryn won overall when the 2010 season opened at 9th Flamingo's and the class B Eikestad Plastic Repairs VW Golf MkI 1800 have seen more fettling on the suspension during the silly season and if it's performance during the December Wings and Wheels Gymkhana at AFB Ysterplaat was any indication of it's potential you would be wise to come prepared. Günther a firm believer that much of the demands of Gymkhana driving can be found in set-up and attitude rather than sheer power. Watch this Brackenfell Spiderman couple surprise again.
Jacques du Plessis and Walter van Dyk won the 10th Flamingo's event in dominant fashion with their class C du Plessis Auto Toyota Conquest RSi 1600 but lacked consistency through the year to challenge for the championship. Flamboyant behind the wheel and with a new Etienne Lourens built 1600 engine to add to the almost rally specification Conquest 2012 holds much promise for the Ceres based team.
Fanie du Toit and Kobus Wilson Jnr were the quickest combination of the season but for some unfortunate circumstances they failed to win the championship overall in their always immaculately prepared class A Mazda Rustler LDV 2.0 16v. This the team to conquer should anyone have aspirations of winning the 2012 crown and the Worcester based duo will take some beating.
Three consecutive drivers titles have left Izak van Zyl at the crossroads as he has also qualified as a very competent drifter and may well concentrate his considerable skills on rear wheel drive for 2012. The class G Dynotech VW Golf GTi 2.0 Turbo must rate as one of the quickest gymkhana cars ever created and requires more than average skilles to perform well, but the prospect of Izak at his best behind the wheel of the equally impressive Nissan 200SX Turbo certainly grabs the attention.
Gary Meyer returns behind the wheel of the notorious de Jongh / Louw class C Pest Control VW Golf MkI 1600 with Pierre Appelgryn pointing the way and this combination certainly has what it takes to rattle a few of the established feathers. Pierre initially navigated for his father, Günther, but then had to sit out an event and mother, Louise, have now taken ownership of the suicide seat in the Spiderman Golf.
Another team that will undoubtedly be ruffling feathers will be Herman and Mike Mathee in their much anticipated Race-Tech 1 class F Datsun GX Sedan 2.0. A dedicated gymkhana car as never before seen in the series the potential of this vehicle will be closely monitored. The hours - innovative thinking and sheer dedication behind the scenes is admirable and unlikely to ever be repeated at this level of motorsport.
Gawie Smit another who have not been idle - the class E BMW M3 have been put on a serious diet and have been virtually rebuilt to all tar rally specification. The most spectacular driver of 2010 has every intention of repeating the feat and wants to challenge for class honours too.
Rest assured that Leon Engelbrecht, Marius Swart, Jacques Otto, Brent Laurings, Duncan Jepthas, Nashrene Schloss and many others would not have been idle leading into this first event.
Though it is encouraging to note the dedication of the established competitor the interest of grassroot competition has to be retained.
