24 November 2009 Preview 6th Uniref Gymkhana
Round ten of the 2009 Witzenberg Motorklub Gymkhana Championship is undoubtedly going to prove quite testing on Saturday 28 November 2009 when the 6th Uniref Gymkhana heralds the end of another fantastic season at Flamingo’s Restaurant and Dance Club Langebaan. This is the final chance to consolodate points positions in the 2009 championship and with all ten rounds counting Saturday will bring the best out of every team.
Weather for Saturday currently 80% confidence in being Clear Skies, 15ºC minimum and 29ºC maximum, with fog in the morning. If you are planning on driving through early morning please make sure you leave in good time and drive safely, the West Coast is notorious for it’s heavy fog! Sunrise will be at 05h31 and sunset at 19h39 with a 10km/h South Easterly wind till midday and a 20km/h South Westerly wind in the aftenoon. Pack that sunscreen and put it to good use! Pastor Deon Maartens will once again open proceedings at 09h30 on Saturday.
First team of the 71 strong field set to start at 10h00 and quite possibly a miximum entry of 75 will limit runs to three per entry. Fantastic to finish the seaon with a capacity entry and certainly a compliment to every competitor, official, sponsor and supporter of the formula. Thank you for your part in making this a superb season!
Izak van Zyl currently tops the drivers points log in his Dynotech class G VW Golf GTi MkII 2.0 Turbo and with four overall victories behind his name the popular Brackenfell ace will give it his all to make it five. Danye Louw have once again proven that there is good merit in consistent results and though the Moorreesburg car dealer have not won overall as yet, he certainly have done enough to stay in contention with the H&H Motor Spares Wellington class C VW Golf MkI 1600. Duncan Jepthas another who simply never gives up and the Kuilsrivier based driver certainly have the potential to take outright victory in his Powerflow Exhausts class G VW Golf MkII TSi 2.0.
Jacques du Plessis finds himself down on points despite having taken his first overall victory at Fairbridge Mall and the Ceres driver is certainly determined to add to this success in his very rapid Du Plessis Auto class C Toyota Conquest RSi 1600. Unfortunately his tarmac rally attemps have both resulted in blown headgaskets but Jacques will be back! The first rear wheel driven car on pints is the Everson Construction class E BMW 325i of Danie Smuts. The Wolseley driver deceptively quick in a car not always suited to the tight confines presented by a gymkhana route. Danye Louw have made great progress as a driver and also lead class B H&H Motors Spares Wellington VW Golf MkI 1800. The Moorreesburg driver grinning from ear to ear but he is very aware of the challenge from the fast improving opposition.
Nashrene Schloss have also been impressive on all surfaces this year and her green class B Toyota Corolla Sprinter Twin Cam 1800 have been more that a little frustration to the male ego’s. Still charging this Wetton lady will be strong on the wet surfaces expected on Saturday. Now also an accomplished contributer to the www.raceweb.co.za electronic magazine.
Frustrated by serious fuel starvation the class B VW Golf MkI 1800 of Günther and Louise Appelgryn now sports fuel injection and the popular couple intend regaining the class B lead as soon as possible. A fifth Dan in Karate serves as adequate proof of the Durbanvile driver’s sporting talents and his challenge will be noted. Unfortunately a multitude of reasons have seen both André Dreyer (Weskaap Bakwerke VW Golf GTI MkII 2.0 16v) and Fanie du Toit ( Mazda Rustler LDV 2.0i) take short sabbaticals and that allowed Morné Roux to take the lead in class A with his Mazda 323 EGi 2.0i. Once again proving that consistent placings are as important as outright victory. This Kraaifontein based driver could well be moving up the ladder after this weekend.
Jacques Otto and his rapid Toyota 1600 powered class F Nissan LDV has to be one of the favourites come Saturday. Gary Meyer dominates class D in his neat Opel Corsa 1.3 and currently finds himself 19th overall on points. A total of 149 drivers and 211 navigators have scored points to date and with this the final event everyone will be out to consolidate their placing in the overall and class championship. Without a doubt one of the most competitive seasons since the opening event in 1999.
Danye Louw lead class C from the Toyota of Jacques du Plessis but Albertus Loubser is also rapidly closing the gap with Jacobus Loubser and Robin Wakeford also making good progress. Gary Meyer and Charl Carr dominate class D in their Opel Corsa entries but there is sure to be a serious Golf challenge soon with Edward Kruger currently doing exceptionally well. Local Langebaan driver, Attie Groenewald, could however be the first one to beat the Opel challenge in his Citi Golf.
Danie Smuts is Mr consistent in class E with his BMW but the similar machines of Johann Zulch, Jacobus Smit and Morné Olivier are all improving. Jacques Otto leads class F in the white Toysan 1600 LDV with the similar red Innovative Woodworks entry of Anton Smit close behind, but their big challenge comes in the shape of the returning Ruan Reynders Ford Escort Sport 2.0 and the conventional 1400 Nissan LDV of Kobus Wilson Jnr.
Izak van Zyl might be leading the class G challenge in his Dynotech VW Golf Turbo but he will face stern opposition from the Powerflow Exhausts TSi Golf of Duncan Jepthas as well as the relatively unknown supercharged 1600 Toyota powered Lotus Super 7 of Jan Nel and the consistent CTi Turbo of Walter van Dyk.
For sheer spectacle do not miss the opportunity to see Ryno Hough steering the Calvinia Mustang V8 through the route with it’s rear wheels. This talented Calvinia driver never ceases to amaze with his superb car control. Another who have shown good potential has been Andrew Pojie but he has spoiled his record with a few bloopers at recent events and will want to set the record straight at Flamingo’s.
Marcile Louw leads the navigators championship (the first time that a lady have enjoyed this honour) and to rub it in Nashrene Schloss find herself second with Walter van Dyk third. Marcile also enjoys fourth place (class B) with Louise Kellerman fifth and Jehan de Jongh sixth. Johan Swart is seventh with Louise Appelgryn eighth, Monica Robbertse ninth and Emile Blanché tenth.
Glomix Bricks and Blocks have been exchanged for the familiar Uniref as title sponsor of the 6th consecutive event at Flamingo’s Langebaan. Without support of this nature our sport will face dire straits and for that we applaud Donevan Denyssen as faithfull supporter of the gymkhana championship. André and Leona Vorster as always the superb hosts at Flamingo’s Restaurant and Dance Club Langebaan. Richelieu (Selwyn Williams), Motorheads (Heide-Marie von der Au), Pleroma Insurance (Commentary Caravan) deserving of similar credit by competitors and spectators. Acknowledgement also goes to the traffic officials present on the day!
Pierre van der Westhuizen will be the Clerk of the Course with Danie Terblanche the MSA Steward. Scrutineers for the day will be Albertus Loubser and Michael Ramshaw whilst documentation will as always be led by Anette Vermaak. You will be able to complete documentation from 07h00 on Saturday morning.

The 6th Uniref Langebaan Gymkhana will see 75 teams contest the final event at Flamingo's Restaurant and Dance Club on Saturday 28 November 2009. Hard to believe that it all started in 1999 and it's still growing in 2009!
Final event of the season and everyone will be challenging for championship positions. Expect the 6th Uniref Flamingo's Langebaan Gymkhana to be a very special event as it willhopefully be run in perfect summer weather.
Glomix Bricks and Blocks will be replaced by Uniref as title sponsor. Donevan Denyssen remaining loyal to the sport and hopefully this relationship will continue into 2010 and beyond!
See you there!
Izak van Zyl claimed the 2009 Witzenberg Motorklub Gymkhana Drivers Championship in the best way possible when he won the 6th Uniref Gymkhana at Flamingo’s Restaurant and Dance Club Langebaan on Saturday 28 November 2009. In the absence of Jehan de Jongh it was brother-in-law, Danye Louw, navigating the Dynotech class G VW Golf MkII 2.0 Turbo and there simply was no stopping this...
